Vibration devices have been around for many many years. Since the 1970s, massage guns and vibration devices have become more and more available to the sports performance market. The first "portable" device that was used for patients and clients was the Deep Muscle Stimulator (DMS), R.I.P. to the godfather of massage guns Dr. Jake Pivaroff. His device was shaped like a gun and had a heavy aluminum flat bit at the end. Although its weight was heavy and only one-speed of massive intensity, it was well-liked amongst athletes. For the clinician, it was a brick; clunky and cumbersome to use with control and the attached AC cord was an added challenge. Clinicians and manual therapists today prefer a more portable and light weight option to act as an extension of their body during Instrument Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) techniques.

What Consumers Want in a Massage Gun

In the mid to late 2000s, a new surge in massage guns began. Although the concept was not new, the technology of weight, variable speeds, portability, and battery operation made them indeed a new treatment device for consumer use. After many versions and refinements of massage guns over the years, these devices have become a standard tool in a consumer's gym bag, as well as many gyms.

Consumer insights tell us that the majority are looking for a massage gun that has 3-primary functions.

  • Must be lightweight and portable

  • Must be quiet

  • Must have variable speeds

As consumers and athletes travel more to compete, watch their kids compete, or just go to the gym, a massage gun may take over the foam roller for practicality and size. These guns are getting smaller each year and still possess the same power and speed that consumers want. Hence, if you're looking for a device to take the edge off your discomfort before or after your workout, consider my personal favorite that was recently featured in Golf Digest and is the preferred choice of Spooner Physical Therapy, appropriately named, “The Mini”.
